Hyaluronic acid antidote

Injections with hyaluronic acid are used for wrinkle treatment and facial modeling such as liquid lifting. In most cases, these injections are free of complications. However, problems can sometimes occur. It can also happen that patients are not satisfied with the result of an injection with hyaluronic acid, or that they have imagined the result to be different. If this is the case, the doctors at OmniMed can correct the situation by injecting hyaluronidase. This enzyme causes hyaluronic acid to dissolve and therefore serves as an effective antidote. This ability to reverse the result is also one of the major advantages of hyaluronic acid injections.

What is hyaluronidase?

Hyaluronidase or hylase is an enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid. It does this by converting it into a liquid mass. It can be used for the correction of injections with hyaluronic acids from all manufacturers such as Teosyal, Juvederm, Belotero, Restylane etc.

Since hyaluronidase is also able to dissolve hyaluron naturally occurring in the body, the correction should only be carried out by experienced specialists.

What is hyaluronidase used for?

When injecting hyaluronic acid, the gel takes the path of least resistance in the tissue. Even with careful treatment, it can happen that this takes a different course than intended. The hyaluronic acid then settles in an undesired location. With hyaluronidase, such unevenness, lumps or knots can be dissolved again. The Tyndall effect, in which the filler shimmers bluish through the skin, can also be corrected with hyaluronidase.

Dissolving hyaluronic acid at OmniMed

At OmniMed, we not only specialize in injections with hyaluronic acid, but also have experience in corrective procedures following these injections and will be happy to advise you. To assess the results of hyaluronic acid injections, it is important to wait two weeks after the treatment, for example in the lip area. Then we can determine together with our patients whether a correction using hyaluronidase is necessary.

In the case of hyaluronidase itself, a local anaesthetic ointment can be applied in advance if desired. The hyaluronidase is then injected. As with all other injections, we proceed with caution and use as little material as possible in the first step. This makes particular sense with hyaluronidase to avoid dissolving the body's own hyaluronan. After two weeks, the result of the hylase treatment is assessed and - if necessary - a further injection is carried out.

FAQs about hyaluronidase

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that can specifically break down hyaluronic acid. It is used to correct undesirable results after wrinkle injections - e.g. overcorrection, nodule formation or asymmetrical results.

The treatment is useful if hyaluronic fillers have not been incorporated correctly, have shifted, create too much volume or the result looks unnatural. Rapid dissolution may also be necessary in cases of intolerance.

Basically yes - provided it is non-cross-linked or cross-linked hyaluronic acid on a non-permanent basis. Permanent or non-CE-certified fillers cannot usually be dissolved.

The hyaluronidase is injected with pinpoint accuracy using a fine needle. The effect sets in within a few minutes to hours, complete degradation usually takes place within 24 to 72 hours.

The treatment is generally well tolerated. A local anesthetic can be administered if necessary. A slight burning sensation or feeling of pressure directly after the injection is possible, but usually only lasts for a short time.

Temporary swelling, redness or hematomas at the injection site are possible.

Yes, a new wrinkle treatment with hyaluronic acid is possible - but at the earliest 7 to 14 days after the dissolution, so that the tissue can calm down sufficiently.
