CoolSculpting®

Cryolipolysis with CoolSculpting®, the original treatment from ZELTIQ, reduces fat cells in precisely defined areas of the body using cold temperatures. Stubborn fat deposits on the body that refuse to disappear despite diet and exercise can be minimized without surgery using CoolSculpting®.

This revolutionary body contouring treatment was developed at Harvard University under the direction of Dr. Dieter Manstein and Dr. Rox Anderson. The two discovered that fat cells are much more sensitive to cold than the surrounding tissue. The scientific name for this process used in CoolSculpting® is cryolipolysis. The company ZELTIQ was able to clinically prove the effectiveness of the procedure and has since been offering CoolSculpting®, a successful product for permanent fat reduction.

A few days after a CoolSculpting® treatment, the cells enter a state of apoptosis (controlled cell death). This means that the treated fat cells die off naturally. A local inflammatory reaction occurs in the treatment area, and the destroyed fat cells are metabolized by the lymphatic system and simply removed.

CoolSculpting®

Fat cells react far more sensitively to cold than the surrounding tissue (skin, nerves, muscles). The treated fat cells crystallize at just 4 degrees Celsius, while the rest of the area remains unharmed. Pain or serious discomfort is very rare during cryolipolysis treatment. Sometimes, in addition to swelling and redness, there may be bruising or temporary numbness. Unlike with surgery, however, you will be able to go about your everyday life as normal after cryolipolysis treatment, saving you time off work.

CoolSculpting®

CoolSculpting is a treatment method for reducing troublesome problem areas. However, it is not suitable for eliminating larger fat deposits or losing weight. The following areas are suitable for treatment: upper arms, back, waist, hips, abdomen, saddlebags, inner thighs, bra area, male chest, armpits, and double chin.

We receive numerous inquiries about the technology used in the CoolSculpting system and how CoolSculpting technology differs from other technologies on the market that claim to be "like CoolSculpting , " including LipoCryo, KryoKontur, Coolplas, Lipoglaze, Lipo Freeze, Cooltech , and CoolContour. These devices are marketed under many similar-sounding names, but they all have one thing in common: each is marketed under a different marketing campaign designed to convince physicians that these devices are equivalent to genuine CoolSculpting and to convince patients that they are receiving a treatment that is no different from genuine CoolSculpting treatments. With this letter, we would like to explain and clarify the process of fat reduction using the proprietary technology known as cryolipolysis with a few facts.

That is not correct. Cryolipolysis and CoolSculpting are some of the registered trademarks of ZELTIQ Aesthetics, Inc. and refer in part to services related to the proprietary, patented CoolSculpting technology. Cryolipolysis technology is a scientifically proven, clinically tested procedure that removes fat cells from the body through a completely natural process known as apoptosis. Only CoolSculpting by ZELTIQ can claim to perform cryolipolysis treatments, as ZELTIQ is the sole licensee and manufacturer of this specific technology and has protected the treatments under the Cryolipolysis brand name. The nearly thirty peer-reviewed clinical articles that demonstrate the safety, efficacy, high patient satisfaction, and acceptance of the cryolipolysis procedure all refer to CoolSculpting technology. To the best of our knowledge, none of the competing "fat freezing" systems can point to a single authoritative source for its safety or efficacy.

That is not true. Only CoolSculpting from ZELTIQ is approved (U.S. Food and Drug Administration 510(k) No. K090094). Competitors claim that because CoolSculpting is FDA-approved and their devices are based on CoolSculpting technology, their devices are also FDA-approved. This claim is false. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not approve technologies for market approval, but rather devices. To date, the FDA has only approved CoolSculpting. The CoolSculpting system is in fact the only system that has both FDA approval and CE marking for medical devices. Any devices that claim to work in the same way as CoolSculpting treatments cannot refer to ZELTIQ FDA approval without having gone through the FDA approval process themselves.

Yes, it is. The patents on which the CoolSculpting system technology is based and under which it is marketed were awarded to Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), which has licensed them exclusively to ZELTIQ. In addition, ZELTIQ holds a number of patents covering various aspects of CoolSculpting technology. ZELTIQ's patent portfolio protects our technology in the United States and in countries around the world. Unscrupulous companies may claim that CoolSculpting technology is not protected by patents, but such a claim is simply untrue. Despite ZELTIQ's strong intellectual property portfolio, many competitors who flood Europe with imitations of our devices continue to make false claims. But when it comes to the real facts, the CoolSculpting system clearly stands out from the copycat products. Here are the reasons why:

When deciding which fat reduction system to buy or which one to be treated with, you should not take everything you are told at face value. If you are offered a device with Cryolipolysis technology, ask for proof that it is an authentic ZELTIQ CoolSculpting system. Ask for the appropriate evidence if you are told that the device is "FDA approved". If you are told that the use of a device is supported by clinical studies, ask to see the relevant documents (not just any marketing brochures that may be produced by the company's marketing departments, but peer-reviewed articles published in reputable medical journals). If you do this, the choice is easy.
