Most vascular changes, such as Spider veins or red veins are completely harmless and not a cause for concern. Nevertheless, they are often an eyesore to us. Many patients come to our OmniMed practice in Eisenstadt wishing to have the vascular changes treated. For an effective and gentle treatment we offer various laser procedures. In today’s blog article we provide an overview of the treatment of vascular changes.

What are vascular changes

This refers to changes in the blood vessels that can take various forms. Couperose und Spider Naevi are, for example, fine red capillaries on the skin. They can indicate disturbed blood circulation and are often visible in the facial area. Another typical example of vascular changes are broken capillaries or Feuermale.

But also Spider veins are particularly common and represent a cosmetic problem for many patients. Unlike the other examples, these appear as fine bluish veins that usually occur on the legs and require a special treatment. It is important to distinguish spider veins from the usually larger varicose veins as the latter can indicate venous insufficiency and often come with symptoms such as swelling and pain. They also require a completely different treatment than the fine spider veins.

How are vascular changes treated?

Vascular changes can be effectively treated with a laser therapy . It is important to determine the type of vascular change precisely beforehand in order to initiate the correct therapy. At OmniMed we work with different laser systems, each optimally adapted to the type of vascular change. For changes with red capillaries we work with the KTP-Laser IDAS.

The bluish shimmering spider veins, on the other hand, are usually located in deeper vessels. A much longer wavelength is required here to treat them effectively. The Nd:YAG Laser is suitable for this. Often these vascular changes are not as easy to treat as the red capillaries, which is why multiple sessions are often necessary.

With a laser treatment disturbing veins can usually be effectively reduced in most cases in just one session. The KTP-Laser works particularly gently and promises quick results. Its precisely targeted beam of light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the red blood cells. This causes the vessel to warm up, which leads to its closure. The surrounding tissue remains unharmed during this treatment.

The Nd:YAG Laser works on the same principle but can act much deeper in the tissue. The laser settings are precisely adjusted to the individual characteristics of the spider veins, including size, depth and color. The laser emits light at a wavelength that is specifically absorbed by hemoglobin. The targeted heating of the blood vessels causes coagulation and closure of the spider veins, while the surrounding tissue remains unaffected. Thanks to its integrated cooling function, this laser also acts as gently as possible.

What should I bear in mind during laser treatment?

Temporary redness or slight swelling may occur after treatment, which usually subsides within a few days. It is recommended to avoid sun exposure and, if necessary, cooling measures or special creams can be used to alleviate discomfort.

It is important that the skin is not tanned during the treatment. Winter is therefore an excellent time to have a vascular laser treatment. So you can start this spring and summer full of new self-confidence.
