What complications can occur?

In most cases, injections with hyaluronic acid are free of complications. As hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the body, the injection is generally well tolerated. However, in individual cases, the injection may not proceed as expected.

This is because the filler is distributed in the tissue where there is the least resistance. Although experts can assess this well, it can happen that the hyaluronic acid settles in a different place than planned. This is then noticeable as small lumps or knots. It is also possible that a patient may have imagined a different result from the treatment. In such cases, hyaluronidase is used as an antidote.

How does hyaluronidase work?

Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that is able to dissolve the previously injected hyaluronic acid. It converts the hyaluronic acid into a liquid mass and thus reverses the effect. In this way, unevenness caused by the injection is dissolved again. In addition, a bluish shimmer that occurs in some cases as a result of hyaluronic acid injections can also be corrected.

What should be considered during treatment with hyaluronidase?

One difficulty in dissolving hyaluronic acid is that hyaluronidase also dissolves the body's own hyaluronic acid. The treatment must therefore be carried out with extreme care.
