Botulinum toxin or Botox has become an integral part of wrinkle treatment. However, the injection is not only suitable for removing frown lines and the like, but also helps with excessive sweating, among other things. In our facts about Botox treatment today, we want to tell you what Botox can actually do, how it works and what it is used for.

1 Yes, Botox is a toxin.

First things first. Some patients are deterred from treatment because they have heard that Botox is poisonous. However, a distinction must be made here. Yes, botulinum toxin is, as the name suggests, a toxin – more precisely: a neurotoxic protein. This means that it influences the signal transmission between nerves and muscles. We make use of exactly this effect in the context of Wrinkle treatment with Botox. Because through the interrupted communication, we can, for example, no longer unconsciously frown or pull our eyebrows together into the so-called frown lines.

We can therefore give the all-clear, because with Botox, as with all substances, the following applies: The dose makes the poison. The amounts we inject during treatments are harmless. Around 50 ampoules of botulinum toxin would have to be administered for a treatment to be toxic to patients.

2 There is the so-called Botox effect.

If wrinkle treatment with Botox is repeated more often in the same area, the "Botox effect" occurs. This means that the affected muscles unlearn how to form wrinkles due to the repeated injections. Since the wrinkles cannot be formed due to the active Botox, they also do not dig in deeply. Taken together, both lead to the result of a Botox treatment lasting longer and longer. At the beginning, the effect lasts for 3 to 6 months, depending on the area injected. Later, the intervals between treatments can become longer thanks to the Botox effect.

3 Botox treatment is not only effective against wrinkles.

Even though wrinkle treatment is the most common field of application for botulinum toxin, it is by far not the only one. Because the signal interruption between nerves and muscles is also extremely useful, for example, in the treatment of Masseter hypertrophy. This is a masseter muscle hyperactivity and an enlarged chewing muscle (musculus masseter) resulting from it. This not only makes the face look angular or square, but can also lead to teeth grinding (especially at night) and thus, in the worst case, to tooth damage and severe headaches. With a Botox injection, we reduce the muscle activity in the large chewing muscle.

Excessive sweating, the so-called Hyperhidrosis, can also be improved with a Botox treatment. One speaks of Hyperhidrosis when people tend to have increased sweat production regardless of the prevailing temperature. This can often be very stressful for those affected. Botox injections in the armpits, on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet block the nerve transmission to the sweat glands and thus stop excessive sweating.
