Consultation: In a detailed consultation the treatment is explained, open questions are clarified and the exact costs of tattoo removal are discussed. After the consultation, treatment can, if desired, be started immediately. We also carry out comprehensive photographic documentation.

Preparation: For the treatment the tissue should be intact, that is it should be free of irritation. The degree of skin tanning is always a factor in tattoo removal. Dark tattoo colors such as black or blue are less affected even when removing on tanned skin. For lighter tattoo colors on tanned skin it is better to wait until the skin tone has lightened again. Sun & tanning beds should therefore be avoided before tattoo removal. This should be discussed individually during the consultation.

Treatment: The first treatment step is the fractional pre-treatment of the skin with the Pixel-Handstück, making the tattoo removal both gentler and more effective. This is followed by the actual laser removal, in which targeted laser pulses are delivered into the skin. These penetrate the tattoo's color pigments and break them down into the tiniest particles. The surrounding tissue remains largely spared. The treatment is precise and is individually adapted to the respective tattoo.

Aftercare: After the treatment, a healing ointment is applied and the area is covered with a loose dressing, which can be left in place for 1-3 days provided it does not get wet. After a few days scabbing occurs, as pigment particles are expelled in the form of a scab. Once the scab has fallen off, the dressing or plaster can be removed and a healing ointment applied. This supports and accelerates the healing process and is available at our practice.

Follow-up treatments: A follow-up treatment can be carried out as soon as the treatment area has completely healed.

The number of treatments depends on many factors. If the tattoo was done recently and still contains a lot of ink, you should definitely expect to need more treatments than with older, slightly faded tattoos, which may be removed after just 3 sessions. DIY tattoos are generally removed more quickly than those done by a professional. It therefore depends on the age of the tattoo in question as well as the ink color used.

Fractional pre-treatment of the tattoo reduces the number of sessions required in every case, as a greater amount of ink can be removed during each session and the laser can be used at a higher energy level.

Care instructions: During the tattoo removal period, which usually consists of several treatments, the treatment area should be protected from intense sunlight. If the removal is urgent and the tattoo removal is to take place during the summer months, the regular use of patches is recommended.

Since the beginning of 2022, we have been offering tattoo removal with the Harmony XL PRO von Alma. This powerful multi-technology platform impresses with a large selection of attachments for a wide variety of treatments. For tattoo removal, we use the ClearLift applicator and thus utilize the power of the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser for a gentle, safe and at the same time effective treatment. Multicolored tattoos can also be removed with it.

Harmony XL Pro with ClearLift applicator

With the new system Harmony XL Pro Alma has launched a Special Edition laser platform that offers a wide range of treatment options. At OmniMed, we chose the system with the ClearLift applicator decided, because this award-winning applicator is an especially versatile Q-switched Nd:YAG treatment solution. It combines two wavelengths in a single laser module and is therefore ideally suited for the successful removal multicolored tattoos. For this, a powerful laser is required that can deliver sufficient energy in the absorption range of a wide variety of colors. The wavelength of 1,064 nm wavelength in the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is optimally suited for treating darker colors, the wavelength of 532 nm for lighter ink colors.

Effective yet gentle

These colorful tattoos can be successfully treated using different wavelengths. The powerful Q-Switched laser system works in the target tissue with particularly short pulses of high peak power, so-called nanosecond pulses, without putting excessive strain on the surrounding tissue. Color particles in the tattoo are broken up using mechanically released energy. The treatment is carried out without thermal damage to the tissue and therefore with minimal risk of scarring or hypopigmentation.

For tattoo removal, we use a special “Homogenius handpiece,” which, as the name suggests, ensures uniform energy absorption in the tissue. This prevents “hot spots” and allows for ideal coverage of the treatment area without overlap. This enables us to make the tattoo removal process as painless as possible. We also have a separate cooling system for very sensitive areas.

Besides the fact that this laser can also multicolored tattoos can be removed, another strength of the system lies in the possibility of pre-treating the tattoo with a special fractionated handpiece. This makes tattoo removal more effective and, above all, gentler for the patient.

Thanks to the fractional mode we use, the formation of blisters—which is often a cause for concern—is prevented, thereby reducing the likelihood of scarring. However, subsequent scarring cannot be completely ruled out, as everyone reacts differently; nevertheless, we work to minimize this risk through fractional treatment.

All in all, tattoo removal is a delicate subject and side effects are always possible due to the diversity of tattoos. Unfortunately, it is not possible to rule them out completely.
