Have you ever heard of a KTP laser? This special laser is used to treat vascular changes such as couperose and is therefore also known as a vascular laser. What this laser can do and what exactly is behind it is our topic today.
What is the KTP laser?
The abbreviation KTP stands for potassium titanyl phosphate. This ionic compound of potassium, titanium oxide and phosphate is often used in the form of crystals as a frequency doubler in laser devices. In a Nd:YAG laser, for example, the crystal can convert light with an original wavelength of 1,064 nm into green light with a wavelength of 532 nm. This wavelength makes the KTP laser ideal for treating pigmentation.
Pigment treatment with KTP laser
The KTP laser is therefore used in aesthetic treatments to remove unwanted redness and pigmentation. At OmniMed in Eisenstadt, we use this type of laser to treat couperose, spider naevi, rosacea, broken veins, telangiectasia, hemangiomas and certain port-wine stains. These skin problems can be treated excellently with the green light of this laser. This is because the pinpoint laser beam is absorbed by the red blood cells in the affected vessels. This causes the vessels to heat up, which ultimately causes the walls to collapse. This closes the vessel permanently and the disturbing pigments disappear.
IDAS Laser at OmniMed
At OmniMed, we rely on the IDAS vascular laser system. This potassium titanyl phosphate laser is gentle on the surrounding tissue and only works in the blood vessel. A few treatment sessions are often sufficient for mild couperose, hemangiomas and spider naevi, but several sessions may be necessary for larger vessels or affected areas. Four weeks after completion of the treatment, a follow-up appointment is arranged to optimize the result.
Advantages of the KTP laser
The treatment of couperose, spider naevi, red veins, haemangiomas, rosacea and telangiectasia with the KTP laser at OmniMed is much more effective than other laser systems:
- faster,
- more effective and
- less painful.
