Facial expressions make up a large part of our communication. It is not just what we say, but also how we look while saying it that carries weight. A multitude of facial muscles play a part in our facial expressions. They allow us to laugh, wink, or frown. With all these movements, small wrinkles form temporarily. The more pronounced our facial expressions and the older we get, the deeper these wrinkles can become. While typical laugh lines around the eyes still convey something cheerful to many, other constantly visible wrinkles are often a burden for those affected. Especially the so-called Frown line – that wrinkle which runs vertically between the furrowed eyebrows – makes us appear tense or even angry for no reason when it is more pronounced.

The frown line

This frown line or glabellar line is formed, like other wrinkles, over the course of life through facial movements. The glabella is the hairless area between the eyebrows. The name comes from the Latin glabellus, which means something like smooth or hairless. Wrinkles in this area are caused by contracting the eyebrows, which happens unconsciously when making an angry facial expression. Therefore, a deep glabellar line can also make us look tired or even angry.

Treating frown lines with Botox

For many affected individuals, the frown line is particularly distressing due to the constantly angry expression. With a Botox injection however the glabellar fold can be treated. Botulinum toxin inhibits the activity of the affected muscles, preventing these folds from forming. It is important to have a precise injection and the right dose, so that natural facial expressions are preserved and patients do not appear artificial. At OmniMed the Botox treatmenttreatment against the frown line is therefore always carried out in two steps: Two weeks after the first treatment the result is checked and optimized if necessary. This avoids over-injections.

Botox effect

One week after the treatment the final result of the Botox injection is visible. How long it lasts depends on muscle activity and the depth of the wrinkles as well as the dose. On average the effect is effective for 3 to 6 months, therefore most patients visit us 2 to 3 times a year. An advantage of treatment with botulinum toxin: it leads to the so-called "Botox effect. This means that with repeated treatment in the same area, such as the glabella, the muscles gradually unlearn how to form wrinkles. As a result, the effect of the Botox injection also lasts longer with multiple treatments.

Combination with hyaluronic acid

If the frown line is already particularly deeply etched, Botox treatment can also reach its limits. Because then a mere relaxation of the affected muscles is no longer sufficient. In these cases, a combination treatment of Botox and Hyaluronic acid provide an effective solution, as hyaluronic acid has a plumping effect.
