Facial expressions make up a large part of our communication. Not only what we say, but also how we look when we say it carries weight. A large number of facial muscles are involved in our facial expressions. They make us laugh, wink or frown. Small wrinkles appear briefly with all these movements. The more pronounced our facial expressions and the older we get, the deeper these wrinkles can become. While typical laugh lines around the eyes are still a cheerful expression for many, other wrinkles that are constantly visible are often a burden for those affected. The so-called frown lines in particular - the wrinkle that runs vertically between the contracted eyebrows - can make us look tense or even angry for no reason if they are more pronounced.

The frown line

Like other wrinkles, this frown line or glabellar wrinkle develops over the course of a lifetime as a result of facial movements. The glabella is the hairless area between the eyebrows. The name comes from the Latin glabellus, which means smooth or hairless. Wrinkles in this area are caused by the eyebrows drawing together, which happens unconsciously when we have an angry expression on our face. This is why a pronounced glabellar crease also makes us look tired or even angry.

Treating frown lines with Botox

For many sufferers, the frown line is particularly stressful due to its constantly annoying expression. However, glabellar wrinkles can be treated with Botox injections. The botulinum toxin inhibits the activity of the affected muscles, which means that these wrinkles can no longer be formed. A precise injection and the correct dose are important so that the natural facial expressions are preserved and patients do not appear artificial. At OmniMed, Botox treatment for frown lines is therefore always carried out in two stages: Two weeks after the first treatment, the result is checked and optimized if necessary. In this way, we avoid over-injections.

Botox effect

The final result of the Botox injection is visible one week after the treatment. How long it lasts depends on the muscle activity and depth of the wrinkles as well as the dose. On average, the effect is effective for 3 to 6 months, which is why most patients visit us 2 to 3 times a year. One advantage of treatment with botulinum toxin is the so-called Botox effect. This means that with repeated treatment in the same area as the glabella, the muscles increasingly forget how to form wrinkles. This means that the result of the Botox injection lasts longer with repeated treatments.

Combination with hyaluronic acid

If the frown lines are already particularly deep, Botox treatment can also reach its limits. This is because simply relaxing the affected muscles is no longer sufficient. In these cases, a combination treatment of Botox and hyaluronic acid can offer an effective solution, as the hyaluronic acid has a plumping effect.
